Alvarado Street Brewery

We’re kicking off our new Brands Blog, a place to showcase the breweries and cideries we work with. To start off, we’re featuring one of the breweries that’s been able to steadily send Day One beer since the beginning of the pandemic, Alvarado Street Brewery.

Founded in 2014 by the father and son team of John and J.C. Hill, Alvarado Street Brewery (ASB) has made a name for themselves through their award-winning beers and locally-sourced cuisine to match. Their original Brewery & Grill location, located in Downtown Old Monterey, resides in a historically registered building constructed in 1916, which formerly housed the Monterey Elks Club, as well as a theater in various incarnations.

A few years later, they built out a beer garden behind the original location, while simultaneously creating a 20 bbl production brewery and tasting room in Salinas. Since 2015, ASB has won 7 medals at the Great American Beer Festival, the most prestigious competition in the country, including 3 for their Mai Tai P.A. and most recently winning Gold and Bronze, each of the past two years.

While IPAs, Fruited Sours, Lagers, and Pale Ales have become their signature styles, ASB routinely brews a vast array of styles, each providing new flavors to explore for every palate. In 2019, their passion for variety expanded even further as they opened a spin-off location in nearby Carmel-By-The-Sea called Yeast of Eden, which specializes in wild and mixed-fermentation Ales.

Our last shipment from ASB included four different beers. The first of note, is Imperial International-Style Juice: an Imperial IPA collaboration with Reuben’s Brews out of Seattle. We also received Westeez, a West Coast IPA featuring New Zealand hops Nelson Sauvin and Riwaka. Soft Tones is the third beer, an Imperial IPA featuring Simcoe, Simcoe cryo, Ekuanot, and Loral hops. Finally, we received 12 oz six-packs of Bixby Blonde, their take on a Belgian Farmhouse-style “Single,” fermented in an open oak foeder.

We’re always excited to be working with a brewery as esteemed and multi-faceted as Alvarado Street. Their acclaimed body of work and dedication to community matches the ethos of our team here at Day One Distribution.
